Gold Coast Butterflies

Hobby Farm

The Gold Coast Butterflies hobby farm is a charming little place sure to cause a flutter of excitement in young and old alike.

Located in bushy Gaven (just north of Nerang), the butterfly farm’s exterior gives little indication of the wonder lurking within. That will soon change when you’re met by Josephine Romeo, a passionate conservationist who loves nothing more than educating people about these beautiful creatures.

Upon arrival, Jo takes visitors on a tour of the life-cycle centre, demonstrating (with real-life specimens) exactly how a butterfly comes to be. Next up is the real treat as you’re invited to step foot in the walk-in butterfly house.

Inside the smallish enclosure is an array of colourful flowers, lush green plants and, of course, plenty of butterflies. Once the butterflies grow comfortable with the newcomers to their home, they quickly come out of hiding, fluttering peacefully about the enclosure, and landing on anyone who will stay still for more than a few seconds.

Children will adore taking a seat amongst the plants and tempting the winged creatures to land on them with a piece of watermelon, or other, nectar-rich fruit. If you’re lucky you’ll come away with a gorgeous photo (or hundred!) unlike anything you’d manage to snap in everyday life.

The type of butterflies living here varies throughout the year, but species you’re likely to see include the Cruiser, Monarch and Varied Eggfly. All in all it’s a wonderfully peaceful and relaxing experience.

Nice to know: Gold Coast Butterflies can get very busy in the mornings, so if you’re wanting to avoid the rush, it’s worth coming down later in the day.

Need to know: *Opening hours are Thursday to Saturday from 10am-2pm (excluding winter months). See their website for special school holiday opening times. Opening hours may be subject to change so always check before visiting.
